INTRO TO THE THERAPEUTIC USE OF ART

Live class - 4 CEUs

This workshop will introduce participants into the therapeutic dimension of art.

After a brief historic overview of the therapeutic use of art in mental health, a multidimensional approach to health and illness will be sketched.

Other topics will be the functions of the image, the evocative and the cathartic power of art. Case studies will be presented. Participants will have the opportunity to explore themselves and others through the art making.

The use of art as a therapeutic tool will also be demonstrated through clinical vignettes that will help participants explore some of the applications of art therapy, learn about the cathartic quality of art, see how art making can be a communication tool, and understand how metaphors allow patients to process painful memories and unresolved conflicts.
